barrel racing apparel
What equipment/apparel do I need for eventing? Please think of anything and everything.?
I’ve been riding western (barrel racing, etc.) for twenty years and decided to take english lessons to refine my seat, etc. I’ve found that I love jumping and my instructor thinks I’d enjoy eventing and my horse would love it. I have no idea what clothing I need and what all I equipment (saddles, etc.) I need for my horse. Could someone give me a list?
Dressage:
Dressage bridle*
Dressage Saddle/girth*
Dressage Bit (You have to use a snaffle in dressage- although there might be a FEW exceptions, this is the general rule. If you do not normally ride in an acceptable snaffle (Check the USEF website for acceptable bits) you will have to have a special one for Dressage)
White saddle pad
White polo wraps if your horse needs protective footwear- boots, even bell boots, are not allowed.
Black Show coat
Black gloves
White or tan breeches
hairnet
Black tall boots or Black smooth leather paddock boots and half chaps
White Show Shirt**
Stock tie and gold pin, or a “cheater stock tie” (It’s basically is a premade one on a piece of white cloth, so you could wear a regular t-shirt underneath. http://www.cheshirehorse.com/cw3/assets/product_full/eqdickiepretiedstocktie.jpg However, keep in mind that if it gets really hot, you will NOT be able to take off your coat!)
Black helmet, either black velvet helmet or a regular helmet with a black velvet helmet cover.
If you need a dressage whip, make sure it is within the acceptable length.
Spurs only if you need them.
Cross Country
-Jumping bridle* (With whatever bit works for you)
-Jumping Saddle/girth*
- Protective boots, even if your horse doesn’t nessacarily need them- Cross country jumps, if hit, can be very hard on their legs, and who knows what they might gallop through. Usually galloping boots or splint boots are used, although really it depends on your horses needs.
-Saddle Pad
NOTE: Usually for cross country, you pick your “colors”- one or two colors you coordinate your tack and clothing to, so you and your horse match and stand out.
-Boots for you- or half chaps and paddock boots.
- Medical Armband
- Protective Vest
- ASTM/SEI approved helmet
-gloves
-crop or spurs if needed
- Tan breeches, although black and your color breeches are acceptable.
-Studs and stud kit, if you need them. (They sqrew into the horse’s shoe to give more traction) At the lower levels you prolly will not.
-Stopwatch with large numbers, Minutes and seconds clearly visable.
Show Jumping/Stadium:
- Jumping Saddle/Girth*
-Jumping bridle*
- Protective boots if needed
- Saddle pad, conservative color, usually white but it really varies.
- gloves
-crop/spurs if needed
- Medical armband
- ASTM/SEI approved helmet, preferably black.
- Black boots or smooth leather black half chaps with matching paddock boots
- Show coat- can be black, If you want to use your dressage one, but can also be black/blue with pinstripes, ect. Basically, this is alot like Jumpers.
- White show shirt**
- Ratcatcher or Stock tie with pin (Once again, cheater stock ties count)
-Tan breeches
- Hair net
———————————–
These are the bare minium. Obviously, if it is a multiple day rally, you would also need horse care items. You will prolly also want to make sure you have some Liniment and a basic first aid kit, and make sure you have your number on as the show requires (They have different rules) You also will want to make sure to bring tack cleaning materials.
Oh, and the *ed Items are optional- you can either have seperate jumping and dressage tack, or you can just have a multipurpose saddle and switch out the bits on the bridle. Personal choice, really, although as you progress up the levels the flexibility decreases. The **ed things are because, really, if you have a cheater stock tie you might not need a show shirt- however, if it it really hot, you cannot take your coat off- and if they call coats (Because it is so hot) they will require you to take your coat off- So plan for your area. I live in MN, and very rarely in our short show season are coats called. However, if you lived in TX, or Florida, it might be a different case.
There are loads more of things, but really, you learn them as you go- I also prolly forgot some things because they are so basic to me I don’t think about it. But I tried to give you what I could…..But remember, none of this includes horse care stuff. And if I went into this, I will run out of space (I have had it happen) but I will say this- Even if it is a one day affair, make sure to bring a water bucket- your horse will need it, and you cannot let him drink out of a communal trough- Imagine if your horse, or another horse who drank out of it, had Strangles or some other such disease? The whole show would have it by the end of the day.
